Jimmy Cricket had a trip down memory lane recently when he was reminded of his appearance on BBC’s Pebble Mill at One more than 22 years ago.

The famous comedian appeared on the show, hosted by Ross King, along with The Barron Knights, a British humorous pop group, originally formed in 1959 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Pebble Mill at One was a live daily chat show broadcast on weekdays at 1pm on BBC One, screened from 2 October 1972 to 23 May 1986 and again from 20 October 1991 to 25 May 1996.

It was transmitted from the Pebble Mill studios at BBC Birmingham, being hosted unusually from the centre’s main foyer area, rather than a conventional television studio.

It was a posting on social media channel Twitter, which provided the flashback for Jimmy.

The tweet, from Dame Agnes Guano‏ (@agnes_guano), said:  “Pebble Mill from March 1996 – welcomes (amongst others) Jimmy and The Barron Knights.”

Ross King MBE is a Scottish television presenter, actor and writer best known for being LA Correspondent for ITV  breakfast programmes Lorraine and Good Morning Britain. He hosted Pebble Mill at One for five years.

Jimmy Cricket has paid tribute to Chas Hodges who died last week from pneumonia aged 74.

Chas, who was one half of the musical duo Chas and Dave, passed away peacefully in his sleep.

He had been suffering from oesophageal cancer, but his family has said in a statement that it was under control at the time of his death.

Comedian Jimmy said he felt “blessed” to have performed on a festive special with the Cockney pair in 1982. Other guests on the show included English rock and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Eric Clapton.

Chas and Dave were particularly big in the 1970s and 80s, and performed four FA Cup final songs with Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Jimmy posted on social media: “Just heard of the passing of Chas, they were great singer song writers with their own inimitable style, they coined a new phrase in music, Rockney, blessed to have done this Christmas Show with them.”

Tickets for the world premiere of Jimmy Cricket’s first play are selling fast.

No more Fiffing and Faffing will be staged at the Blackburn Empire Theatre on Sunday 16 September at 7.30pm.

Join comedy double act Joe Fiffen and Jerry Faffen on their last night in showbusiness. As well as their classic sketches, they’ll be settling some old scores in the dressing room.

Appearing with famous comedian Jimmy will be Jonathan Young from The Bachelors, and actor Colin Meredith, who has had several notable appearances in ITV’s Coronation Street over the years.

Jimmy and his wife May have just returned from a European cruise.

Northern Irish entertainer Jimmy was performing on the Magellan – a ship belonging to Cruise and Maritime Voyages – which sailed along the coasts of France, Portugal and Spain.

Earlier on the cruise, they visited the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, the resting place for the relics of the apostle St James and the finishing point for a popular pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James).

And later they went to the National Pantheon (Panteão Nacional) in Lisbon, in which important Portuguese personalities – including Eusébio – are buried. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira is considered by many as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

On their return, Jimmy posted on social media (see photo below): “Back on dry land and my thanks to one of the newer Cruise ? Companies for looking after us so well, here with fellow artist onboard Gary with his family!”

Jimmy Cricket has visited the tomb of legendary Portuguese footballer Eusébio.

The veteran comedian was at the National Pantheon (Panteão Nacional) in Lisbon, in which important Portuguese personalities – including Eusébio – are buried.

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira is considered by many as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

He was known for his speed, technique, athleticism and his ferocious right-footed shot, making him a prolific goalscorer. During his professional career, he scored 733 goals in 745 matches (41 goals in 64 matches for Portugal).

Eusébio helped Portugal to reach third place at the 1966 World Cup held in England, being the top goalscorer of the tournament with nine goals (including four in one match against North Korea).

Jimmy, 72, posted on Twitter (with the photos below): “Here on our travels stumbled across the crypt of one of the greatest footballers who ever graced a football pitch!”

Jimmy Cricket features in the summertime special of The Big Issue

Jimmy Cricket is among a host of famous entertainers – described as “old-school greats” – to feature in the summertime edition of The Big Issue.

Others include Cannon and Ball, the Chuckle Brothers, Sue Pollard from Hi-de-Hi!, Bernie Clifton and Joe Pasquale.

The Big Issue is a street newspaper founded by John Bird and Gordon Roddick in September 1991 and published on four continents. It is written by professional journalists and sold by individuals.

Its charitable foundation helps enable people who are homeless take control of their lives and earn a legitimate income.

Paul McNamee, editor of The Big Issue, posted on Twitter: “Very excited by our Summer Special, featuring old school greats including , Bernie Clifton, Chuckle Brothers & Sooty. What are you waiting for?

Mr McNamee is the first editor to manage The Big Issue across all national and regional editions as well as online.

A regular media commentator, he has been named Editor of the Year three times by PPA Scotland, and was named British Editor of The Year in 2013 and 2016 by the BSME (British Society of Magazine Editors).

Jimmy Cricket has been paying tribute to “one of the all-time great theatrical agents” in his latest column in the Lancashire Evening Post.

The 72-year-old comedian recalls the career of Phyllis Rounce, who also managed the likes of Rod Hull and Emu, and Tony Hancock.

Rod Hull was a comedian, best known as a popular entertainer on British television in the 1970s and 1980s. He rarely appeared without Emu, a mute, highly aggressive arm-length puppet modelled on the Australian flightless emu bird.

Hancock was a high-profile comedian and actor during the 1950s and early 1960s, enjoying major success with his BBC series Hancock’s Half Hour, first broadcast on radio and then on television.

Jimmy said Phyllis – who was known as Phil to her friends – was an “exceptional manager who went the extra mile for her artistes”.

He added that she “had a love affair with showbusiness that started during the Second World War.

“She realised the part entertainment could play in boosting soldiers’ morale and keeping their spirits up on the way to the front.

“How lucky was I to be guided by a lady with such a caring nature and such creative vision.”

On social media channel Twitter, Jimmy said the June column in the Preston-based LEP was his “dedication and tribute to one of the all-time great theatrical agents in the world of showbusiness”.

Among those the famous comedian caught up with recently was actor Malcolm Dixon, who played a character in Star Wars, and his wife Anita.

Star Wars is an American epic space movie franchise based on the series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”.

Malcolm played Leektar in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.
