Full part in Womble film ‘to be a surprise’

Jimmy Cricket's role in the Womble film was reported in the North Wales Daily Post

Jimmy Cricket’s exact role in a new feature film called Womble will not be revealed until it is actually screened.

As reported on Cricket Times last month, Womble, one of the biggest independent movies to be made in North Wales, is being shot over the summer and will be set for release in 2016.

The 18 March edition of the North Wales Daily Post newspaper states that well-known entertainer Jimmy “will bring his unique brand of comedy to the climax of the film”, which is being set in and round Prestatyn.

It reports that top comedian Jimmy, 69, will play himself as a talent contest judge.

Movie director Lee Howard told the Post: “We’re excited Jimmy will be in the film… it’s fantastic that he’s managed to fit us into his schedule.

“We are saving the details of his performance as a surprise to the audience.”

The film is about a man called Aloysius Rupert Womble (played by actor and comedian Tom Spencer), who is in his 30s and living with Asperger’s Syndrome in a typical seaside resort town.

Children and adults affected by Asperger’s Syndrome have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviours.

Aloysius’s dream is to become a stand-up comedian. The film is a week-long snapshot of his life as he goes through the trials of living with a cognitive disorder, while dealing with the injustices forced upon him by society and parts of his community.

Over the seven-day period he prepares for the biggest night of his life – a talent show in his local pub.

It will feature songs from the Beautiful South’s former lead singer Briana Corrigan and American Pie star Thomas Nicholas as well as a string of original songs written by songwriters especially for the movie.

Jimmy Cricket will be teaming up with the world-famous Osmonds for a special Christmas tour later this year

Jimmy Cricket is teaming up with several of the world-famous Osmonds for a special tour of the UK later this year.

The well-known Northern Irishman comedian will be a special guest for the series of shows, called the Andy Williams Christmas Spectacular, throughout the month of December.

The Osmonds are an American family music group with a long and varied history as star performers.

They started their musical careers as children and achieved further success as teen-music idols, going on to produce a hit television show and also perform as solo and group artists.

The Osmonds group first comprised brothers Alan, Wayne, Merril and Jay Osmond. They were later joined by younger siblings Donny – the most famous of all of them – and Jimmy. Their only sister Marie, who rarely sang with her brothers at that time, launched a successful solo career in 1973.

Jimmy said: “The month of December has traditionally meant pantomime time and this tour will be quite a departure for me.

“Nonetheless, it is an exciting prospect and I cannot wait to team up with the Osmonds, who have a global following and reputation.

“Although I love the art form of pantomime and the attraction it holds for children and families, I have thought for some time that there should be an alternative offering out there over the Christmas period.

“This show fits the bill perfectly and the atmosphere at each venue will be so uplifting that those in attendance will definitely leave in the Christmas spirit!”

Tickets for the tour will go on pre-sale from Wednesday morning (March 25), with tickets on general sale from Friday.

Jimmy Cricket appeared in the St Pat’s event at the Freckleton Sports and Social Club

Jimmy Cricket felt like he had gone back in time when he performed at a Lancashire venue recently.

The St Pat’s event featured famous entertainer Jimmy alongside the comedian Tony Jo at the Freckleton Sports and Social Club, just outside the city of Preston.

It was a fund-raiser to raise money for the cancer unit at the Victoria Hospital in Blackpool.

The event, which was held on a Sunday afternoon, was packed to the rafters.

Jimmy is performing more and more on a Sunday afternoon and is finding they are a popular time for people to attend a live event.

He said: “What made this afternoon even more enjoyable was that the atmosphere was more akin to the club circuit back in the 1970s and 1980s. I was very impressed with the set-up at this venue in Freckleton.”

Fund-raiser for Lourdes Easter pilgrimage 150 150 mhamer

Fund-raiser for Lourdes Easter pilgrimage

Jimmy Cricket was at St Matthew’s Parish Hall in Jarrow in Tyne and WearJimmy Cricket was especially happy to help out at a fund-raising event recently.

The famous entertainer was at St Matthew’s Parish Hall in Jarrow in Tyne and Wear for the special function, which was organised by a lady called Liz Boylan.

It was arranged in memory of Liz’s late husband who passed away last year. She wanted the proceeds of the event to go to the Lourdes Easter pilgrimage. Easter is a special time at the famous shrine in France for young disabled children.

Liz got to know Jimmy’s son, Fr Frankie, when he studied theology at Ushaw College and Durham University a few years ago during his training for the Catholic priesthood.

So it was no surprise that Jimmy bumped into some of Fr Frankie’s friends with whom he trained and who went along to St Matthew’s to support Liz and her event.

Jimmy said: “A big thanks also to all at the Bede’s Well guest house in Jarrow where I and my wife, May, stayed after the show. We both received magnificent hospitality and I cannot praise the owner Paul enough.”

The two photos accompanying this story are of Jimmy and friends at the fund-raising event.

‘Great chance to support live entertainment’

Jimmy Cricket will appear alongside Andy Eastwood at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, on Sunday 19 AprilJimmy Cricket is set to team up again with friend and multi-talented entertainer Andy Eastwood, who can do a “great George Formby tribute act”.

The famous comedian will appear alongside  Andy at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, on Sunday 19 April.

The show is being presented by the local Bexhill Festival of Music Society, which is led by  Tony Mansi.

Jimmy has worked with Andy on numerous occasions in the past and continues to be in awe of his musical talents.

“Not only can Andy do a great George Formby tribute, but he is no mean musician with the ability to play several instruments at an incredibly high standard, including the violin and ukulele – plus many more,” said Jimmy.

“Tony has put together a great early evening’s entertainment programme, with the show due to start off at the very family friendly time of 5pm.

“This will be a great post-Easter opportunity to support live entertainment if you live on the south coast around the East Sussex shoreline.”

Wigan-born George Formby was an actor, singer-songwriter and comedian, who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s.

On stage, screen and record he sang light, comical songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele, and became the UK’s highest-paid entertainer.
