‘Wonderful news in these gloomy times!’

Jimmy Cricket will do a New Year's Eve show at the Lyndene Hotel in BlackpoolJimmy Cricket has welcomed the news that two Blackpool hotels which had closed are back in business.

Earlier this month, the famous funnyman had expressed his sadness that the Lyndene and sister hotel St Chads had shut their doors for the final time.

However, the Blackpool Gazette reports that the two hotels are ready to return to business, with their managers re-employed.

Jimmy has appeared regularly at the popular Lyndene over the past few years.

He said: “Wonderful news in these gloomy times for Blackpool and ⁦@LyndeneHotel and for all the staff at #TeamLyndene and St Chads Hotels!

“We were all hoping for a miracle! Great news!”

His performances at the Lyndene were limited during 2020 following the restrictions imposed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Jimmy did his last show there in September before another lockdown again resulted in the closure of hospitality venues.

Owners the Fragrance Group announced the Lyndene and St Chad’s hotels will now be run by hotel management company RBH, which has taken over operations with immediate effect.

The hotels were shut suddenly with staff left unpaid on 3 February by operating firm Bespoke Hotels Group.

The Blackpool Gazette added that a number of staff made redundant will be offered employment soon.

It is hoped hotels will reopen this spring when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

The Lyndene and St Chads stand next to each other on the seafront.

Husband and wife team Paul and Claire Swift manage both.

Jimmy has had five seasons in total at the Lyndene, which starred as the Le Ponderosa in the second series of Peter Kay’s TV hit comedy Phoenix Nights.

Comedy night at The Stilton Tunnels a sellout

Stilton Tunnels entertainment venue

Jimmy Cricket is appearing at a special comedy event in the village of Stilton in Cambridgeshire towards the end of this month.

The Stilton Tunnels (above) has long been a venue for live entertainment in the village, which gave its name to the well-known cheese, Stilton.

Since then Roy’s comedy evenings have all been a sellout, even before the event is advertised – and Jimmy’s is no exception.

He organises these evenings every three to four months and among those who have appeared so far have been Mike Lancaster, The Fawlty Towers Dining Experience, and Lee Lard’s Peter Kay Tribute.

Roy is looking forward to welcoming famous entertainer Jimmy on 21 April for a night of comedy from the master himself.

Jimmy, 71, said: “I have known Roy for a number of years and it is a privilege to have been asked to appear at one of his very popular and successful comedy evenings.”

The Manchester Evening News featured the story about Frankie Mulgrew's ordinationFrankie Mulgrew’s ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood has received plenty of publicity in the media.

The 35-year-old younger son of Irish-born and Rochdale-based entertainer Jimmy Cricket became a priest this summer and among newspapers and websites to provide coverage of the special event was the Manchester Evening News which printed a news article (above).

It included quotes from Fr Frankie who says he used to drive comedian Peter Kay to shows.

Frankie, who has been a stand-up comedian in his own right, says one of his first parts in show business was “playing the back end of a cow at the Belfast Opera House”.

The newly ordained priest, whose stage name was Frankie Doodle, has compiled and edited a book called Does God LOL? (LOL is internet slang for Laugh Out Loud), which went on sale recently.

Ken Dodd, Ricky Tomlinson, Tim Vine, Jo Brand, Milton Jones and the late Frank Carson are among the famous showbiz names to have contributed to the book, which is priced at £7.99 or less (and is available at all good bookshops and websites, including Amazon).

Comedy legends Mick Miller and Jimmy Cricket to team up in Darlington

Comedian Jimmy Cricket is returning to the Civic Theatre in Darlington – just months after appearing on the same stage as Baron Hardup in a pantomime version of Cinderella.

This time around, Jimmy is down to do his usual stand-up and is teaming up with fellow comedy legend Mick Miller.

Jimmy enjoyed his time in Darlington so much at Christmas that he could not wait to get back to the civic theatre. When a date was found over the summer, he did not need think twice about it.

He found the Darlington audiences very warm and receptive, and so he now wants to perform the stand-up for which he is famous.

Mick Miller received plenty of praise and plaudits after his appearance in last December’s Royal Command Variety Performance which was broadcast on ITV.

In addition to the Darlington appearance on Wednesday 11 July, the Jimmy and Mick Show tour also includes Preston, Chester, Sheffield and Manchester. It is even down to visit the world-famous Edinburgh Comedy Festival in August.

Jimmy said: “It is a great thrill to be returning to the civic theatre in Darlington after appearing in the theatre’s pantomime last Christmas.

“I am especially excited as people who came to see the panto will now get a chance to see me perform my stand-up.

“Darlington has a great theatre which is really ideal for us comedians as it has an intimate setting that creates a great atmosphere. The evening in question brings together two fine exponents of the arts of comedy and this is a comedy treat that should not be missed.”

Mick said:  “This date in Darlington kicks off mine and Jimmy’s tour together, and I know we are going to have a barrel of laughs over the different dates.

“But I cannot think of a better starting point than Darlington. If you want a giggle or two, then hop down to the civic theatre because with the two of us on stage, it is going to be madcap fun and laughter all the way.”
