Lyndene Hotel – regular shows again in 2019

Lyndene Hotel in BlackpoolJimmy Cricket is lined up to do 23 more dates next year at the popular Lyndene Hotel in Blackpool.

Much-loved Northern Irish comedian Jimmy, 72, has done many shows over the past few years at the hotel on the Promenade.

And he will be performing there again regularly during 2019 – see all the dates below.

Jimmy has two dates at the west Lancashire hotel before Christmas – on Saturday 1 December and Wednesday 5 December.

The Lyndene, which is perched on the seafront, is one of Blackpool’s unique locations as it welcomes tourists and visitors all year round.

LEP column: Here’s to the king of comedy writers

Jimmy Cricket's Lancashire Evening Post columnJimmy Cricket remembers legendary comedy writer and close friend, the late Eddie Braben, in one of his recent newspaper columns.

Edwin ‘Eddie’ Charles Braben was best known for providing material for Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise. He also worked for David Frost, Ronnie Corbett and Ken Dodd.

He was credited with changing the profile of Morecambe and Wise, helping to turn them into one of the most popular and enduring comedy acts in the history of British entertainment.

Belfast-born entertainer Jimmy, who has lived in Rochdale for many years, recalls in the Lancashire Post how Eddie started out as a market trader, selling fruit and veg from a stall in Liverpool’s St John precinct. In his spare time, he made up jokes.

Jimmy says how nervous he was when he first met Eddie, adding: “That was the start of a beautiful friendship that spanned two TV series, five radio series and even a book of letters from my Mammy.”

Northern Irish comedian Jimmy developed a lasting friendship with Eddie who sadly died aged 82 in May 2013. Below is a newspaper article in which Jimmy paid tribute to his old pal at the time.

Jimmy Cricket with Daryl, the entertainment manager at Beverley Holidays park in DevonJimmy Cricket returned to Torbay in Devon for the first time in a couple of years when he appeared in the coastal resort of Paignton.

The much-loved Northern Irish comedian performed in the wonderful Theatre Cabaret room at Beverley Holidays park (picture of Jimmy on stage below).

He is pictured right with Daryl,  the assistant entertainment manager at the park.

‘It’s official darling… the plumber gag is global!’

Jimmy Cricket's column in the Lancashire Evening PostJimmy Cricket tells readers of his latest newspaper column about a successful two-week stint he had in Missouri, USA, a few years ago.

The famous entertainer says in the Lancashire Evening Post that he had a nervous start in Branson, where his show was being held, but settled in soon after telling a particular joke.

He recalls: “At my first show I did a popular joke from my act that goes ‘I’d now like to sing a sad song, folks. It’s all about a plumber that says goodbye to his girlfriend.

“‘It’s called It’s Over Flow!'”

Jimmy says that he phoned his wife, Mrs Cricket, after that first performance to tell her: “It’s official, darling, the plumber gag is global!”

Jimmy Cricket with 60s icon Dave BerryJimmy Cricket bumped into a 60s music icon before a show in East Yorkshire.

The famous entertainer was preparing for an appearance at the Bridlington Spa Theatre over the last Bank Holiday in May when he was asked to pop into a vintage fair being hosted in the adjacent Queens Hall within the Spa entertainment complex.

Jimmy, 69, said: “I was pleased to do this because it was a great opportunity to generate a bit more interest in my show scheduled for later on in the afternoon.

“So I had an opportunity to perform on the platform at the fair and I even managed to sneak in an odd joke or two!

I have bumped into Dave on numerous times over the years and was delighted to see him in Bridlington. He had rented a stall at the fair to sell his line of guitars, which was a shrewd move as the fair attracted some 4,000 people.”

Dave (pictured above right with Jimmy) is a British pop singer and teen idol of the 1960s. His best-remembered songs are Memphis, Tennessee (1963), The Crying Game from 1964 and his 1965 hit Little Things.

Dave is still touring and often participates in national solid gold sixties shows across the UK.

Jimmy then went on to perform his comedy stand-up show in the theatre next door. For the third year running, the event attracted a great family audience.

Jimmy Cricket’s recent performance at the Concordia Theatre in Hinckley, Leicestershire, was captured on film.

It was the second of two variety shows, which well-known entertainer Jimmy did with Midlands crooner Michael George.

The other one took place at the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, seven days earlier.

They each featured Michael, his wonderful eight-piece band, his troupe of dancers, a supporting female vocalist, and comedian Jimmy as the special guest star.

The Concordia Theatre show is an annual event, which Michael holds each year to raise money for charity, with all proceeds going to Leicestershire-based  Hope Against Cancer.

Jimmy said: “I enjoyed working with Michael at both the Gainsborough and Hinckley shows and found his enthusiasm for performing just wonderful to see.”

Fun run poster flags up birthday charity event

The special poster publicising the charity fun run being organised to mark Jimmy Cricket's 70th birthday in OctoberA special poster has been produced to publicise the 5K charity fun run being organised to mark Jimmy Cricket’s 70th birthday in October.

The event is being arranged in Jimmy’s adopted hometown of Rochdale in Greater Manchester by a seasoned run organiser called Andy O’Sullivan, who is not only associated with the local Rochdale Harriers running club, but who has also been awarded the MBE for all the fundraising he has done over the years.

Famous Northern Irish entertainer Jimmy will turn 70 on 17 October 2015 and his birthday race will take place the following day.

The location of the start will be the Cock & Magpie pub in Whitworth, near Jimmy’s beloved Healey Dell Nature Reserve where he is often spotted walking and taking in the beautiful surroundings.

He will be there in person to start the race off at 11.30am, with the route planned to take in two laps of Cowm Reservoir, ensuring the race will be a true 5K.

Jimmy said:  “A big thank you to Rachel –  one of the charity’s trainee fundraisers – for producing a nice flyer for the event (above right).

“Naturally, I will be on hand to start the race off outside the Cock & Magpie public house and welcome back the winners after two laps of this stunning water feature. I will also hand out the prizes in the Cock & Magpie once all runners are safely back home.”

All proceeds from the fun run will be donated to one of Jimmy’s favourite charities, which is the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Manchester.

The entry fee to join Jimmy on this fun race is £4 to club runners and £6 to all others. An additional £1 will be charged to entrants who turn up on the day. Prizes will be awarded to all race finishers.
