A ‘lovely St Patrick’s Day celebration’ in Lancashire

It was a lovely, “St Patrick’s Day”, celebration today @BRCTheatreGroup my thanks to Leigh and all the volunteers with Alex on sound and Nick on lights and Guy the stage manager alongside Dansworks Dance Academy and Mrs C. singing a few Irish songs!

Northern Irish comedian Jimmy Cricket celebrated St Patrick’s Day in style.

The popular entertainer performed one of his Great Value for a Tenner comedy shows at the Royal Court Theatre in Bacup, Lancashire, on Sunday.

Afterwards, he posted on social media: “It was a lovely, “St Patrick’s Day”, celebration today my thanks to Leigh and all the volunteers with Alex on sound and Nick on lights and Guy the stage manager alongside Dansworks Dance Academy and Mrs C. singing a few Irish songs! ☘️”

The Royal Court Theatre was the venue nine years ago for the recording of his first DVD, Jimmy Cricket Live – Pull Your Seats Forward. It can only be bought via the Go Shopping page on this website or at one of Jimmy’s live shows.

St Patrick’s Day, also known as the Feast of St Patrick, is a religious and cultural celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of St Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

Jimmy Cricket Live – Pull Your Seats Forward was created by the popular comedian’s family company, Wellie Boot Productions, in 2010 at the Royal Court Theatre in Bacup, Lancashire, near Jimmy’s adopted home of Rochdale in Greater Manchester.

And the Northern Irish entertainer returns to the venue on Sunday – St Patrick’s Day – for one of his Great Value for a Tenner comedy shows.

Belfast-born Jimmy produced the DVD in response to the overwhelming public clamour that suggested there was a real demand for a recording of his stand-up entertainment.

The DVD is an hour and 10 minutes long and includes Jimmy’s favourite routines, a phone call and letter from his mammy, his famous Leaving Home poem, his sentimental ballad called I’m Dreaming of a Far off Land and 20 minutes of extras.

Around 8,000 copies of the DVD have been sold, which is particularly impressive as it is not available in retail outlets; it can only be bought via the Go Shopping page on this website or at one of his live shows.

Jimmy posted on social media this week: “Looking forward to my return to the Theatre were I recorded my DVD nine years ago for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations this coming Sunday with Dansworks Dance Academy and a few Irish songs from Mrs C. ☘️”

Jimmy Cricket recently returned to the quaint Ribble Valley village of West Bradford near Clitheroe for another fund-raising event.

The Northern Irish entertainer was last at the Lancashire village’s community hall in 2015 and organiser Michael Fox had hoped to snap up his services again after what was a successful first event.

As Jimmy had been down to appear in neighbouring towns and villages of the Ribble Valley, Michael has had to wait a couple of years.

Jimmy’s return coincided with this year’s St Patrick’s Day festivities as the show ended up being scheduled for the Friday after 17 March.

It gave Michael and his organising team good cause to make the event into an Irish-themed one, with tricolour flags out in force. Michael even turned up in a green tie (top picture)!

For this second successful appearance, Jimmy was joined by his wife, female vocalist May Marion, and Jim Nicholas of Cliff’s Disco – who dressed up as Elvis Presley for the evening (below).

Jimmy Cricket performingFamous funnyman Jimmy Cricket began St Patrick’s Day week with a visit to the Mill Rythe Holiday Village on Hayling Island in Hampshire.

It was not Jimmy’s first visit to Mill Rythe as he has been there on several occasions in the past.

In fact, he was at the resort a couple of years ago helping those holidaying at the resort to celebrate St Pat’s week in style, as was the case this year when he opened their 2017 Irish festival.

Mill Rythe is a favoured location for Jimmy as the set-up is technically advanced and state-of-the-art.

They have live video feeds of stage performers screened on TV monitors around the main cabaret room, as well as great lighting and a fantastic sound system.

It means those entertaining get the best of environments in which to ply their trade, while the audience are treated to the best all-round experience.

Jimmy Cricket was delighted local Gaelic rock outfit The Scattering were able to join him at his latest ‘jam’ night in Rochdale.

What started several years ago as an opportunity for Jimmy and other performers to try out new routines continues with much success as he still hosts these evenings every other month in the lounge area of a local parish centre in his home town of Rochdale.

The famous entertainer has nicknamed those who come to regularly support these evenings as ‘Jimmy’s Jammers’!

Every time the 71-year-old comedian hosts these get-togethers there is a raffle and the selling of refreshments, with all proceeds donated to a chosen charity. The Rochdale And District Blind Welfare Society was the cause to benefit from the latest event in March.

Band The Scattering

Jimmy tries to structure these evenings in a way which not only gives him the chance to try out new sketches and songs – the reason he started organising them in the first place – but he also ensures there are a number of other talented entertainers performing.

As the March night was a week or so before St Patrick’s Day, he invited The Scattering (above) to join him as he knows the band’s lead singer, Andy Kelly.

Said Jimmy: “The band played an instrumental set during the first half, but Andy was able to front the band in the second half when they performed classic Irish singalongs which went down a treat with all those present.”

The next ‘Jimmy’s jammers’ night at St Vincent’s Parish Centre in Rochdale is scheduled for Wednesday 3 May, starting at 7.30pm.

The Northern Irish comedian appeared at a specially arranged lunch for St Pat’s Day 2014, which was held at the iconic Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool.

Jimmy is pictured with Clare Bowles in the photograph below left and, right, both of them are joined by Marianne Kavanagh. The photos were posted by Clare on Facebook.

Jimmy Cricket with Clare BowlesThe event was organised by the Adelphi Hotel and because it went down so well, within 24 hours it was decided to have the same again for the 2015 St Patrick’s celebrations.

And for next year’s show they did not hesitate to rebook Jimmy as they had received so much interest from people for a repeat performance.

The Edwardian-style Adelphi hotel is internationally renowned and was the focus of the  fly-on-the-wall TV documentary series Hotel.
