It is with much sadness that I have learnt of the passing of my dear friend the wonderful journalist and broadcaster John Hannam ⁦

Jimmy Cricket has described the late John Hannam as a “wonderful journalist and broadcaster ⁦”.

Isle of Wight journalist and author John died earlier this month at the age of 80.

His website said he hosted Britain’s longest-running non-stop radio chat show, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2010.

He conducted thousands of interviews with famous stars and personalities.

And he managed to chat to celebrities who would not normally do local radio interviews.

His guests included Charlton Heston, John Mills, Prince Edward, Cliff Richard, Victoria Wood, Ken Dodd, Bruce Forsyth Twiggy and numerous soap stars.

Jimmy said: “It is with much sadness that I have learnt of the passing of my dear friend, the wonderful journalist and broadcaster ⁦@johnhannammeets

⁩”John’s interviews with actors and variety acts on the Isle of Wight were legendary.

“My heartfelt sympathy to his children and Roberta Heart suitxx.”

The What’s On In Isle Of Wight website reported on John’s death.

It said: “Tributes have been pouring in for Isle of Wight entertainment legend, broadcaster and writer John Hannam.

“The much-loved journalist died, aged 80 on Wednesday, September 22.

“A long standing friend of the County Press, John was born in East Cowes and became best known for his easy-going interviews with the stars of stage and screen.

“However, he never forgot the Island’s own entertainment, sporting and community heroes, local names frequently sitting alongside the A-listers in his books, columns and shows.”

Jimmy Cricket and the band at Pontins on the Isle of WightJimmy Cricket was recently reminded of the days when he worked at a Pontins holiday village where fellow TV star Shane Richie was the entertainments manager!

Terri Gardner, who worked with Jimmy in the early 1980s, sent the photo above via a Facebook message.

The picture features Terri and her partner, Ron, and the rest of their band alongside Jimmy at the Pontins holiday village called Little Canada on the Isle of Wight back in 1983.

Jimmy said: “Actually the band worked with me a few times that year and the really interesting fact associated with this holiday village during the same year was that the entertainments manager was none other than Shane Richie!”

Richie is an English actor, comedian, singer and media personality, well-known for his portrayal of the character Alfie Moon in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders.
