Jimmy Cricket met up with some friends recently to try out an updated version of a musical he wrote a couple of years ago called Maloney’s Big Moment.

This new and original piece of theatre tells the story of an ex-pat Irishman living in a coastal town in Spain who gets propelled to the post of mayor because of a sequence of events, even though he cannot speak a word of Spanish!

Jimmy, 70 next month, originally wrote the comedy drama as a radio play and had a read through in front of a live audience back in 2013.

After this he added songs to convert the piece into a full musical show and then premiered it six months later at the Thwaites Empire Theatre in Blackburn.

Now, 18 months on, Jimmy has undertaken major revisions to the script and has also replaced a number of the songs. He then felt he needed another run through with the newly modified version, so earlier this month a further test of the piece was arranged at St Vincent’s Parish Hall in Norden, Rochdale.

Joining famous entertainer Jimmy for his latest musical pilot were Colin Meredith, Nathan Birks, impressionist Johnny Moore, up-and-coming actress Anna Andrews and female vocalist Shona Hawthorn (all pictured above).

Jimmy said: “I was thrilled to have another lift-off with this new show and want to now continue its onward journey through a workshop at a producing theatre.”
