Jimmy Cricket presents the Golden Wellington award to school crossing patrol man Don Frain

A man who has done a school crossing patrol for the past 12 years is the latest recipient of Jimmy Cricket’s Golden Wellington award.

Don Frain patrols Cronkeyshaw Common and helps children who attend Greenbank, St Patrick’s and All Saints Primary schools cross the busy Whitworth Road carriageway in Rochdale.

He is a keen cyclist and cycles to his station each morning and afternoon.

Jimmy’s award was created several years ago  and is based on his trademark wellington boots.

The famous entertainer, 70, said: “Although it is a bit of fun, it has a serious side as I use the publicity from the award to acknowledge a good deed or significant contribution to a community.

“It often shines a spotlight on the valuable efforts of a neighbourhood’s unsung hero.”

Jimmy said about Don: “He has been helping children and parents safely across Whitworth Road now for the last 12 years. His cheery personality can even bring a smile to the grumpiest of motorists.

“When we are all crossing the road with him – mums, dads, grandparents and children from all nationalities – it is just a great feel-good moment.

“Long may he continue!”
