Jimmy Cricket says he is “blessed to have known and worked with” legendary magician Wayne Dobson, who has died aged 68.

Leciester-born Wayne became well known following a host of television appearances in the late 1980s and 1990s.

He hosted his own show called Wayne Dobson – A Kind of Magic.

Wayne had a long and successful career, and campaigned for multiple sclerosis charities, having had the condition for nearly 40 years.

He performed with the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey and Freddie Starr.

His appearance at the 1989 Royal Variety Show, alongside boxer Frank Bruno and sports commentator Harry Carpenter, was particularly memorable.

Fellow entertainer Jimmy said on social media: “Sad to hear of the passing of Wayne.

“He was a superbly gifted magician and comedian.

“Like myself, he started his television career on ITV’s Search for a Star (both of us were on the same show together).

“Even when struck down with multiple sclerosis, the trooper that he was, he carried on performing in his wheelchair!

“I was blessed to have known and worked with him!

“R.I.P. old friend!”

Freddie Starr was ‘one of our best ever visual comedians and mimics’

Freddie was one of our best ever visual comedians and mimics. He took physical comedy on to another level. His incredible performance on the Royal Variety is forever etched in our memories.

Jimmy Cricket was among those to pay tribute to comedian Freddie Starr who died recently aged 76.

The Merseyside-born comic, singer, impressionist and actor was found dead at his home in Spain’s Costa del Sol earlier this month.

TV presenter Amanda Holden told the BBC that he should be “remembered with a smile”, while comic Bobby Davro described Starr as “the funniest man I have ever seen”.

And all-round entertainer Jimmy said: “I would love to see Freddie’s whole 12 minute spot from the 1970 Royal Variety Show. He did great impressions of Billy Fury and Adam faith before Mick Jagger. I saw him live at the Shakespeare Club in Liverpool a few nights after that show and the atmosphere was electric.”

Jimmy, 73, also posted on social media: “Freddie was one of our best ever visual comedians and mimics. He took physical comedy on to another level. His incredible performance on the Royal Variety is forever etched in our memories.”
