A team of carers at a nursing home in Rochdale are the latest group winners of Jimmy Cricket’s Golden Wellington award.

Well-known comedian Jimmy visited Cleggsworth Care Home in Littleborough recently to help celebrate resident Lily Thornley reaching the wonderful age of 100.

He has known Lily for a number of years, but this was his first visit to Cleggsworth House to see her.

“When I arrived at the care home, the staff [pictured above] had arranged a wonderful celebration to mark this fantastic occasion for Lily,” said Jimmy, 70.

“I was very impressed with the caring attitude of the staff and the warm and hospitable atmosphere present within Cleggsworth. This is why I decided to present the full team with my Golden Wellington award, including the care home’s manageress Wendy Estlick.”

The Golden Wellie is an award Jimmy created several years ago based on his trademark wellington boots.

He explained: “Although it is a bit of fun, it has a serious side as I use the publicity from the award to acknowledge a good deed or significant contribution to a community. This often shines a spotlight on the valuable efforts from a neighbourhood’s unsung hero or heroes.”

The famous entertainer has known Lily Thornley for a number of years, as her late brother used to teach the accordion to one of his children.

So when Jimmy, 70, heard she was about to reach the golden age, he wanted to pop along and wish her 100 happy returns!

“To mark the great occasion, a party was arranged for Lily on the afternoon of her special day by the wonderful staff at the care home where she is based,” said Jimmy.
