Silent Night: Unusual story of ever-popular Christmas carol

The serendipitous story of how Silent Night became one of the world's best-loved Christmas carols is told in Jimmy's Cricket's latest newspaper column.

The serendipitous story of how Silent Night became one of the world’s best-loved Christmas carols is told in Jimmy’s Cricket’s latest newspaper column.

The famous funnyman tells readers of the Lancashire Evening Post that it all started with a broken church organ…

Here is the full column which appeared in the newspaper earlier this month:

I’m afraid I’m going to have to relay some sad news, readers.

Come closer… the fairy on my Christmas tree is retiring this year.

Yes, she wants to step down while she’s still at the top!

Did I take you to the edge with that one?

Have you ever wondered how some of the Christmas carols we sing every year came about?

Well, let me tell you about one in particular.

This story takes place in a village called Oberndorf in Austria, on a snowy Christmas Eve night in the year 1818.

While preparing for midnight Mass at the local aptly named St Nicholas Church, Fr Joseph Mohr discovered he could not get a sound from the church organ, no matter how hard he pumped the pedals.

Looking for Divine inspiration, he remembered a poem he’d written a year before, after visiting a poor family in his parish to bless their child.

Enchanting melody

The image of a young mother holding her infant, wrapped snugly against the winter cold, captured Fr Joseph’s imagination and reminded him of another birth almost two thousand years earlier.

He fetched his written poem and rushed round to his schoolteacher friend, organist and composer, Franz Gruber, asking him if he could put music to it?

When Franz read the words, he was struck by their beauty and simplicity and immediately wove a slow, hauntingly enchanting melody to them.

That night, the song Stille Nacht was born, which we all know now as Silent Night.

With barely time for a rehearsal, the two men agreed that Fr Mohr would play his guitar, and sing tenor, while Franz sang bass.

We can only imagine the surprised look on the parishioners’ faces as they filed into the church for Midnight Mass later on that night, expecting to hear traditional Christmas hymns being played on the organ.

Instead, they heard two voices blending in harmony with an acoustic guitar singing an original carol that was as pure as an Alpine stream.

Pretty soon they all joined in.

Captivated

The story might have ended there but for an organ builder called Karl Mauracher who, while repairing the organ at St Nicholas Church in 1824, came across the song in the loft and was determined to popularise it.

It was then published, although Fr Mohr and Franz weren’t mentioned as the writers, and troupes of folk singers used it in their repertoires as they travelled all around Europe.

A famous family of singers called the Rainers, who were popular in America during the 1850s, were so captivated by the melody and words they had it translated into English.

In fact, it has been translated into 300 languages and is said to be the most translated Christian hymn of all.

But there’s more…

Silent Night has also become a symbol of peace.

For during the Christmas Truce of 1914 in the first year of World War I, British, German and French soldiers all sang it in their own language as they crossed over into No Man’s Land to shake hands and exchange gifts.

So, this Christmas as we sing Silent Night in our local carol service, let’s give a thought to Fr Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber.

They may not have earned a penny from their song, but they’ve given us something more important – an enduring musical legacy that’s lasted over 200 years.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Come closer – there’s more…

Have a Selfie with an Elfie - Christmas song for all the family

Why not get into the Christmas spirit early and listen to Jimmy Cricket’s new festive song? It’s called Have a Selfie with an Elfie!
It tells the story of an elf called Edward who decides to strike out on his own and leave Lapland to go out into the big wide world where he gets a job doing meet and greet in a large department store.
However, he soon gets homesick and pines for his fellow elves.
Then, when Christmas Eve comes, none other than Father Christmas turns up to take him home on his sleigh.
But not before he has helped Santa deliver all his presents to all the boys and girls on the way.
Jimmy said: “I wrote the words in song form in August of this year
and a lovely, young songwriting couple called Angus and Cath McGregor put music to it with a modern feel.
“They brought in a studio producer called Ed to put the finishing touches to it – you can find it on the homepage of my website here.”
He added that it was a “Christmas song for all the family”.

Mary’s Meals: ‘What better way to start the festive season!’

What better way to start the festive season!

An evening featuring festive music and a talk from Mary’s Meals founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow takes place later this month.

The event, A Very Joyful Christmas, is at St Bede’s College in Manchester on Saturday 23 November.

Tickets cost £12, which includes refreshments.

Mary’s Meals supports feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities where hunger and poverty prevent children from gaining an education.

Jimmy Cricket, who is a big supporter of the charity, said: “With Christmas coming soon, why not put this one in the diary for 23rd November @StBedesCollege Manchester!

“Attentees on the evening will help to feed & educate 2.5 million children from around the world @MarysMeals.

“What better way to start the festive season!”

The Sacred Heart Choir is providing the festive music on the night.

One pound from each sale of Jimmy’s autobiography Memoirs Of An Irish Comedian, go to Mary’s Meals.

It grew out of a charity called Scottish International Relief (SIR).

SIR was set up after Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow and his brother Fergus took aid from their home in Argyll, Scotland, to Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, during the conflict in 1992.

The Mary’s Meals campaign itself was born in 2002 when Magnus visited Malawi during a famine and met a mother dying from AIDS.

When Magnus asked her eldest son Edward what his dreams were in life, he replied simply: “I want to have enough food to eat and to go to school one day.”

That moment was a key part of the inspiration which led to the founding of Mary’s Meals.

The charity began by feeding 200 children in Malawi.

Today, it feeds more than two million hungry children every school day in 20 countries.

The charity is named in honour of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who brought up her own child in poverty.

Jimmy’s Christmas card for this year

Hi folks, it’s me, Jimmy, come closer!

As we approach the end of 2023, I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who came out to see me at one of my live shows this year, and who bought my new autobiography which came out on the first of April.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about some of the exciting things that will be happening in 2024…

There’s nowhere quite like Blackpool and next March I’ll be playing my ninth season at the lovely Lyndene Hotel on the promenade.

The four dates there next year are as follows:

  • Wednesday 6 March
  • Wednesday 5 June
  • Wednesday 4 September
  • Wednesday 4 December.

Also in March I’ll be going back to the Cabaret Lounge in Hull for my fifth appearance for owners Paul and Bev – on Sunday 17 March (St Patrick’s Day of course!).

And to round off a great month, I’ll be doing a three-day theatre tour of Northern Ireland with my fellow Irish comedians Roy Walker, Adrian Walsh and Gene Fitzpatrick.

The dates for that are:

In July I’ll be doing two shows for my favourite television channel – Talking Pictures – at the Savoy Theatre in Monmouth, Wales. For anyone who can’t get to the actual shows, they will be televised.

I’ll keep you in touch with these shows and any others on this website via the Tour Dates section.

In the meantime, my wife May and myself wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Yours Truly

Jimmy

Strictly Come Dancing is the theme of Jimmy Cricket's 2023 Christmas card.Popular reality TV show Strictly Come Dancing is the theme of Jimmy Cricket’s 2023 Christmas card.

Jimmy is superimposed next to one of the BBC programme’s contestants, TV presenter Angela Rippon.

On the card, Angela appears to be lifting the comedian’s right leg high off the ground.

Jimmy jokes: “Aww she’s pulling my leg folks!”

Strictly Come Dancing is a dance contest show in which celebrities partner professional dancers to compete in mainly ballroom and Latin dance.

A panel of judges hands out scores to each couple, while the general public also have a vote.

The semi-finals of this year’s competition take place at the weekend.

Jimmy’s Christmas cards usually have a topical theme to them.

His 2022 card focused on the fact that the UK had three prime ministers last year.

And the 2020 one featured Dominic Cummings’ controversial trip to Barnard Castle during the first coronavirus lockdown.

It showed Jimmy dressed as Father Christmas telling Cummings: “They are the strongest glass we make in Lapland, Dominic!”

Naughty list

Jimmy also chose a political theme for his 2019 Christmas card – the way Westminster MPs behaved over Brexit.

It showed him telling her majesty the Queen that all members of parliament are on the naughty list.

(Tradition has it that Father Christmas – also known as Santa Claus – has two lists: the naughty list and the nice list.

He checks over his list twice. If you are nice you get presents. If you are naughty you get a lump of coal in your stocking.)

Former PM Johnson reportedly apologised to the Queen after the Supreme Court ruled his decision to prorogue (suspend) Parliament earlier that year was unlawful.

Northern Irish comedian Jimmy has traditionally created his own customised Christmas card over the years.

Jimmy Cricket's Christmas card features the Only Fools and Horses’ sketch staring regular cast members David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, plus special Comic Relief guest David BeckhamIn 2012, he picked a picture of Usain Bolt and Mo Farah, which was one of the iconic images from the London Olympics.

The followed year, it was a photo associated with the theft of his concrete wellies, which was widely covered in the media.

And his 2014 card (above) featured a sketch which took place during that year’s Comic Relief event.

The card recalled the Only Fools and Horses charity scene starring regular cast members David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

In addition, it featured former England and Manchester United footballer David Beckham.

Famous entertainer Jimmy was included on the card as if part of the get-together and referenced his famous Mammy!
