Christmas jam night in Rochdale with Maureen’s Tappers & ‘Elvis Presley’

Great Festive Fun this evening at the, “St Vincent’s Jam Night”, with my fellow act Jim Nicholas and Maureen’s Tappers raising funds for #FrancisHouseCH

Maureen’s Tappers and an Elvis Presley impersonator were among the acts at Jimmy’s Cricket’s Christmas jam night in Rochdale.

The event, hosted by the famous Northern Irish entertainer and his wife May Marion every couple of months,  takes place in the lounge area of St Vincent’s RC parish centre in his home town of Rochdale.

It started about a decade ago as an opportunity for Jimmy and other performers to try out new routines and is still going strong.

The famous entertainer has nicknamed those who regularly support these evenings as ‘Jimmy’s Jammers’.

At every event,  there is a raffle and the selling of refreshments, with all proceeds donated to a chosen charity.

Francis House Children’s Hospice, which is based in Didsburywas the beneficiary of the December jam night.

Jimmy Cricket and his wife May recently attended the wedding of some very good friends in their adopted home town of Rochdale.

The marriage of Lexi Hamer and Chris Rodgers took place at St Vincent’s RC Church in Norden, where Fr Paul Brindle celebrated mass, and was followed by a reception at Rochdale Rugby Union Club in Bamford.

Golden Wellie award is given to band Level Three

Highlights from Jimmy Cricket's latest jam night in Norden, Rochdale

A band called Level Three are the latest recipients of Jimmy Cricket’s much-coveted Golden Wellie award.

The group formally received the accolade at one of Jimmy’s popular jam nights in Rochdale, which are hosted alternately by the famous comedian and his great showbiz friend Eric Devereaux.

Local, national and even on occasions international entertainers perform for nothing at the monthly event which takes place at St Vincent’s RC Parish Centre in Norden.

Among the entertainers at the jam evening for the latest event on 3 April were Level Three, featuring Eddie, Mike and Dave, who performed on the night and helped to raise money for charity in the process.

The Golden Wellington (known for short as Golden Wellie) is an award 72-year-old Jimmy  created several years ago based on his trademark wellington boots.

Although it is a bit of fun, it has a serious side as Jimmy uses the publicity from the award to acknowledge a good deed or significant contribution to a community.

A former Coronation Street actress was among the performers in a parish centre show hosted by much-loved entertainer Jimmy Cricket.

Sue Devaney (below right) has played various roles on British television, including Debbie Webster in Corrie, Rita Briggs in Jonny Briggs, Liz Harker in Casualty and Jane in Dinnerladies.

Also on the bill was singer John from J & D Alexander Jewellers in the Greater Manchester town of Rochdale, where Belfast-born Jimmy has lived for many years.

A collection is made for a charitable cause usually decided on the jam night, with the Sudden Community Centre, based on Cheltenham Street in Rochdale, the beneficiary on this occasion.

The centre has been established in the community through various forms since August 1991.

Since its inception, it has helped thousands of local residents empower themselves to a more dignified and fulfilling life through many of the programmes offered there.

Their mission is for local residents to be members of a vibrant and sustainable community who manage and control their future through the improvement of their own living and working environment.

Emphasis is on empowerment through education, enterprise, and lifelong learning and training opportunities for all.

The centre delivers community-based training and support for local residents, particularly those who are hard to reach and face barriers to accessing information, advice and guidance and progression to employment, training and education.

Going local for new publicity photos

Jimmy Cricket’s Madcap Music Hall show

Rochdale-based comedian Jimmy Cricket, who has one of the town’s most recognisable faces, shopped local for his latest batch of publicity shots.

Jimmy is currently devising a new touring show for 2015 and a pilot version of the idea was launched several weeks ago at a theatre in Blackburn.

The show is entitled Jimmy Cricket’s Madcap Music Hall show and has his trademark antics all over it.

To assist with the future promotion of the show, Jimmy needed to get some publicity shots done.

And the Belfast-born entertainer went to photography business Norden Design, which is owned by Graham Sivills.

When approached about a photo shoot, Graham did not think twice about getting involved. Jimmy then gathered a few  friends together, including his son Dale, who works at his office, to dress up as mock cast members so the photo would appear action-filled.

Jimmy said: “When I thought I needed some new photos, I could not think of a better man than Graham at Norden Design.

“I have known Graham for a number of years and it was good to support a local business which offers everything a national studio chain does.

“The outfit at Norden Design studio is really professional – plus Graham has this great ability to take some marvellous photographs, while at the same time having some light -hearted banter and putting everyone at ease.

“I am really pleased with the images, which I’ll now use as part of the artwork and promotional material for this show for next year.”
