Jimmy takes a ‘little sabbatical’ for health reasons

Jimmy Cricket is having a break from performing until later this year.

Jimmy Cricket is having a break from performing until later this year.

The Northern Irish entertainer said he was taking a “ittle sabbatical for health reasons”.

He added: “I hope to catch up with you all via live performances (as I am missing the warmth of your laughter) in the autumn of 2026!”

Jimmy remembers two great comedians, Billy Dainty and Ken Goodwin, in one of his recent newspaper columns.

Here is Jimmy’s full column in the Lancashire Evening Post in April:

Recently readers, I noticed a few lumps on my head.

I didn’t like them at first, but they grew on me.

So the GP sent me to the dermatologist. Dermott sent me to a plastic surgeon.

I was a bit wary at this point because I remembered I’d lent a guy some money a while ago to have a facelift and now I can’t recognise him to get my money back.

However, this plastic surgeon was quite witty and friendly.

In fact, on the day of the operation he sent me a text: “Meet me in the theatre, Jimmy, and I’ll have you in stitches in no time!”

It was a local anaesthetic and I could hear him upstairs crunching away at my napper and I thought: “I need this like I need a hole in the head.”

Blessed

However it all turned out all right – the operation was a success – and Mrs Cricket turned up with a box of biscuits for the medical team, so they could enjoy a well-earned cuppa.

While I was recuperating, I went on to YouTube to remind myself how funny some of the great comedians of the past actually were.

I was blessed to have known some of them and what made them special was the visual element they brought to their comedy – Max Wall’s funny walk, Norman Collier’s Cchicken routine and who can forget Freddie Starr’s amazing appearance at the 1970 Royal Variety Performance when he did those hilarious impressions of 1960s pop stars?

Another comedian who conjures up warm memories when I see him on YouTube is Billy Dainty.

Billy first caught my eye when I saw him doing his eccentric dance routine on the Sunday Night at the London Palladium television show when I was growing up in Northern Ireland.

Many moons later, I actually appeared in two pantos with him when, as dame, Billy played my mother and I played his silly son!

It was near the end of the run of one of those pantomimes at The Theatre Royal Nottingham when Billy was stricken with prostate cancer which took him from us at just 59 years of age.

Funny walk

Not long before his death, I visited him at his home near Guildford in Surrey.

Ever the pro, he jumped out of his bed and shouted: “Look at this Jimmy, I can still do it!” and he did a funny walk all the way to the bathroom – a never-to-be-forgotten moment.

Another comedian who found a new lease of life on YouTube is Ken Goodwin.

Ken first broke through on The Comedians television series.

His silly gags, infectious giggle and catchphrase – settle down now! – endeared him to viewers all over the country.

I’d like to share a quick story about Ken and myself – come closer readers.

I was booked to do Wednesdays through the summer around about the mid-1990s at the idyllic coastal resort of Ilfracombe in North Devon.

The promoter excitedly told me that although Ken was living in semi-retirement in Spain, he was coming over to the UK for that summer and he was pretty sure he could nail him for our show.

Mortified

I could hardly contain my own excitement at working alongside Ken, as I headed to Ilfracombe on the morning of that first Wednesday.

However, that soon turned to shock as I saw the poster for the show outside the theatre.

Splashed along the top, it said “The Jimmy Cricket laughter Show” and at the very bottom, in tiny letters, it said: “Also starring comedian Ken Goodwin.”

I was so mortified, I waited outside the theatre for Ken to turn up so I could explain I had nothing to do with the billing.

My major concern was the fact lookalikes were on the ascendancy during this period and I was worried some audience members would think they were going to see somebody doing a tribute to Ken.

Rightful place

However, when he drove up in front of the theatre with his wife Vicky and I rushed over to apologise, he could see I was visibly upset and told me not to worry.

We both rang the promoter and Ken was given his rightful place on the poster.

Needless to say our Wednesday shows played to sell-out audiences right through the season.

I’d like to recommend a new movie which you can catch on Sky television.

It’s called The Ballad of Wallis Island and it stars Tim Key as a lottery winner who buys his own personal island and books his favourite pop group to come and do a concert for him.

Innocent, gentle fun with eye-catching scenery – what a combination!

Frank Carson: Memories of a cracking comedian

Jimmy Cricket's tribute to the late Frank Carson

The late, great Frank Carson is the subject of Jimmy Cricket’s latest newspaper column.

Like fellow comedian and great friend Jimmy, Frank was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, died aged 85 in 2012.

Comedian Frank Carson

He had battled ill health for some time.

Frank was a regular face on television for many years from the 1970s onwards.

Having risen to prominence in the 60s after winning Opportunity Knocks, he appeared in popular TV series such as The Comedians and Tiswas.

One of his trademark lines was “It’s the way I tell them!”.

Another one was “It’s a Cracker!”.

Jimmy’s column relives Frank’s famous career and their great friendship.

He posted a grab of the newspaper piece on social media.

And he told his friends and followers: “Hi Folks! My tribute via @leponline and @The_Gazette to a much-loved comedian and friend whom we all sadly miss! #keepvarietyalive.”

Charlie Williams – one of the funniest men to grace a stage 150 150 mhamer

Charlie Williams – one of the funniest men to grace a stage

Hi folks! Paying tribute here to one of the funniest men that ever graced a stage, my friend the great Charlie Williams! #keepvarietyalive

Jimmy Cricket fondly remembered multi-talented trailblazer Charlie Williams in his latest newspaper column.

Writing in the Blackpool Gazette on Tuesday 24 May, Jimmy said Charlie had broken down racial barriers and had successful careers as both a comedian and a professional footballer.

Charlie was born in Yorkshire of Jamaican descent and was the first black comedian to make the big time on British TV.

He found fame on hit 1970s TV show The Comedians and developed the comedy catchphrase “me old flower”.

Others he appeared with on Granada’s The Comedians included Frank Carson, Tom O’Connor and Jim Bowen.

He went on to host the Golden Shot game show.

Previously, he had played professional football for Doncaster Rovers.

Charlie was awarded an MBE in 1966 for his charity work.

He died in 2006 at the age of 78, having been ill for some time with Parkinson’s and dementia.

Jimmy introduced his latest newspaper column on social media by describing his friend Charlie as “one of the funniest men that ever graced a stage”.

His column began: “I’ve been working on an autobiography dear reader, but who hasn’t during the lockdowns, when we’ve had so much time on our hands?

“I think the trick is to revisit it now that things are back to normal.

Ronald Reagan’s 80 chapters

“To keep fired up, Mrs Cricket bought me a few autobiographies I expressed an interest in.

“The first one was Michael McIntyre and when I got to the end I said to her: ‘Look, Michael’s finished his life story at 23 chapters, I’m up to 29 chapters and I’ve still got a way to go.’

“She said: ‘I know, but he’s in his forties, you’re 76!’

“Ouch!

“I then opened Ronald Reagan’s autobiography: ‘Look!’ I said. “It took Ronnie 80 chapters to finish his.’

“‘Yes’, she said. ‘But he had two jobs. First, he was an actor, and then he became President of the United States!’

Won the nation’s hearts

“You know that got me thinking.

“It’s taking me all my time to make a living out of being a full-time comedian, so I’m in awe of anyone who can climb the ladder in one job and then go into a totally different occupation and become a resounding success in that one as well.

“Older readers will remember a black comedian, Charlie Williams, who won the nation’s hearts when he came on the television programme The Comedians.

“Charlie’s wonderful Yorkshire accent endeared him to millions of fans.

“In fact, he was breaking down racial barriers way before the woke people came on the scene.

“However, I wonder how many people actually knew that Charlie had an illustrious career as a professional footballer, playing centre-half for Doncaster Rovers.

“As soon as Charlie reached retirement, a career in showbiz beckoned and he moved seamlessly from kicking a ball to holding a mic.

“Sadly, he developed Parkinson’s Disease, but trouper that he was with the help of his friend Neil Crossland, he carried on touring.

“Neil helped him to dress, led him onstage and Charlie did his act sitting on a chair.

“I have a happy memory of them both coming over to my house in Rochdale, and we all swapped showbiz stories over lunch.”

Comedy legends Mick Miller and Jimmy Cricket to team up in Darlington

Comedian Jimmy Cricket is returning to the Civic Theatre in Darlington – just months after appearing on the same stage as Baron Hardup in a pantomime version of Cinderella.

This time around, Jimmy is down to do his usual stand-up and is teaming up with fellow comedy legend Mick Miller.

Jimmy enjoyed his time in Darlington so much at Christmas that he could not wait to get back to the civic theatre. When a date was found over the summer, he did not need think twice about it.

He found the Darlington audiences very warm and receptive, and so he now wants to perform the stand-up for which he is famous.

Mick Miller received plenty of praise and plaudits after his appearance in last December’s Royal Command Variety Performance which was broadcast on ITV.

In addition to the Darlington appearance on Wednesday 11 July, the Jimmy and Mick Show tour also includes Preston, Chester, Sheffield and Manchester. It is even down to visit the world-famous Edinburgh Comedy Festival in August.

Jimmy said: “It is a great thrill to be returning to the civic theatre in Darlington after appearing in the theatre’s pantomime last Christmas.

“I am especially excited as people who came to see the panto will now get a chance to see me perform my stand-up.

“Darlington has a great theatre which is really ideal for us comedians as it has an intimate setting that creates a great atmosphere. The evening in question brings together two fine exponents of the arts of comedy and this is a comedy treat that should not be missed.”

Mick said:  “This date in Darlington kicks off mine and Jimmy’s tour together, and I know we are going to have a barrel of laughs over the different dates.

“But I cannot think of a better starting point than Darlington. If you want a giggle or two, then hop down to the civic theatre because with the two of us on stage, it is going to be madcap fun and laughter all the way.”
