Jimmy Cricket has started his 2017 residency at the Lyndene Hotel in Blackpool.

His opening night of what is a 22-date season was 21 January and he has five shows lined up there for February, beginning on Wednesday (the full schedule is below).

The rest of Jimmy’s visits will span the coming spring and autumn, with November being the busiest month for him when he will perform there every Wednesday and Saturday.

Much-loved Northern Irish comedian Jimmy, 71,  said: “I was thrilled my 2017 opener went well and a lot of people were present, even though it was a cold January night in Blackpool!”

The Lyndene is one of Blackpool’s unique locations as it welcomes tourists and visitors all year round.

For this hotel perched on the Blackpool seafront,  after the illuminations season ends each year it is straight into its Christmas season with turkey and tinsel stays.

Then post-Christmas and at the start of each New Year, the Lyndene offers attractive packages to keep the hotel ticking over until after Easter, when the early summer season arrives.

Jimmy added: “I am really pleased to have kicked off my 2017 season there as I enjoy being associated with the hotel, and Blackpool always has been – and will continue to be – one of my most favourite places to entertain.”

The famous entertainer appeared at the hotel over the 2015 August Bank Holiday weekend and was so popular he was invited back for a spring run of 32 dates during the first part of last year.

A list of Jimmy’s shows for this year is below.

Sweep Dreams, starring Jimmy Cricket

A picture montage (above) based on a silent comedy film in which Jimmy Cricket starred has been sent to the famous Northern Irish entertainer more than two decades after it was made.

The sender was the Reverend Lawrie Adams who worked with Jimmy on a film project in the early 1990s.

At the time, Rev Adams was based at a church in the pretty town of Whalley in East Lancashire and he was in charge of  BDTV – Blackburn Diocese Television.

Now a retired vicar living in Cheadle, Cheshire, Rev Adams recently went to see one of Jimmy’s shows at the Plaza Theatre in Stockport.

The project  they worked on was called Sweep Dreams, a short, silent, comedy piece featuring Jimmy as a street sweeper in and around the Lancashire coastal resort of Lytham St Annes.

Rev Adams directed the piece and his two daughters – Fiona and Tracey – were also part of the production team.

The week’s filming in 1992 was completed on location in and around the notable landmarks of the resort ie the beach, promenade and bandstand, and, as you would expect, the theme of the film was Jimmy getting into all sorts of scrapes and mischief!

Although the project was never broadcast on television – interesting because this film pre-dated Mr Bean which became a success in the same silent comedy genre a few years later – much fun was had by all who were involved.

Jimmy said he enjoyed his time on location, adding: “It was really nice that 20 years later I was able to hear again from the Rev Lawrie and to receive the montage which brought back many fond memories.”

First, they visited the Corn Exchange Theatre in Ipswich and then went to King’s Lynn the following day.

After the Ipswich date the entire company travelled to a village called Long Sutton, which is near King’s Lynn, in preparation for the next day’s show.

On their arrival at Long Sutton, they all had a meal together at the nearby Ship Inn.

Jimmy Cricket was asked to do a little bit extra when he launched his summer season plans for the Princess Theatre in Hunstanton.

The well-known Irish comedian also relaunched the seaside resort’s newly refurbished Tourist Information Centre with the local mayor.

This local tourism facility has been renovated at a cost of £100,000 and is part of a continued renaissance of Hunstanton. The revival in the resort’s fortunes has seen the theatre reopened and under new management.

The show is scheduled for throughout August and into the first week of September.

Jimmy said: “Hunstanton is an idyllic resort on the stunning Norfolk coastline and the town is successfully reviving the fortunes of its theatre.

“This is because it only reopened a year ago and this will  only be the second summer season the new theatre management have arranged.

“But the profile of the theatre is increasing and the town is getting behind it. This means the summer of 2013 for the Princess Theatre should be a cracker!”

The show is called the Great British Seaside Special and above right is Jimmy with a life-size image of him for one of the front pillars outside its main entrance. And he is pictured top with dancers from the show, trying on his legendary wellies for size! The show will be scheduled each week for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and, as well as evening performances, there will also be family-friendly matinee shows.
