Charles III: Performing in front of the future king

As lockdown continues to #SaveOurNHS I have been looking at nostalgic memorabilia from over the years, all have given me a warm glow, none more than this one when I performed alongside my fellow entertainers in front of the Queen Mum, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, at a time when Variety was King!

Prince Charles, who is now King Charles III, watched Jimmy Cricket performing live on stage back in 1984.

Popular comedian Jimmy was one of the entertainers in that year’s Royal Variety Performance.

The 1984 show took place on 19 November at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London.

Royal guests were the Queen Mother, Princess Diana and Prince Charles.

Also among the performers were singer/actor Paul Nicholas and comedians Bernie Winters and Billy Dainty.

Jimmy said on social media: “Hi folks! Sharing a short video of the opening routine of the 1984 production (which consisted of a rich variety of performers) at The Royal Command Performance! #keepvarietyalive.”

The Royal Variety Performance is a televised show held annually.

It raises money for the Royal Variety Charity, of which the late Queen Elizabeth II was life patron.

Senior members of the British Royal Family attend the event.

The evening’s performance is presented as a live variety show, usually from a theatre in London.

It consists of family entertainment, including comedy, music, dance, magic and other speciality acts.

Jimmy said all the memories of his performances give  him “a warm glow”.

And he added: “None more than this one.

“I performed alongside my fellow entertainers in front of the Queen Mum, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, at a time when Variety was King!

Following the Queen’s death earlier this month, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, became King of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms.

Chelsea Lodge Ladies Festival: Proposing a toast

Chelsea Lodge Ladies Festival

Jimmy Cricket recently attended the Chelsea Lodge Ladies Festival as he was asked to formally propose a toast at the event.

Chelsea Lodge Ladies Festival

This year’s president of the Chelsea Lodge is Jimmy’s lifelong friend Chas Elliot – the two met nearly 50 years ago when they were both Redcoats at the Butlins holiday resort in Clacton-on-Sea and they have remained very good friends ever since.

Famous comedian Jimmy, 71, was asked if he would like to participate in this year’s festival which took place at the Lancaster Hotel in west London.

There is a formal bit to this annual occasion and the organisers felt it would be appropriate if Jimmy was the proposer of the toast. The entertainment then follows – Jimmy was the headliner of this same event eight years ago.Chelsea Lodge Ladies Festival

The ladies festival is not just meant to provide a wonderful evening of conviviality and socialising – the evening also raises a lot of money for great causes.

This year’s beneficiaries were: The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution – which provides a home for 1,000 people across the UK while supporting many more through residential and nursing care and day care services; Prostate Cancer UK; and the Royal Variety Charity, which assists those who have worked in the entertainment industry and are in need of help.

Jimmy Cricket is to host a special celebration at the iconic London Palladium Theatre.

This event will take place in the Val Parnell bar at the London Palladium on Tuesday 16 May 2017.

It is hoped it will bring together Equity members who transferred from the historic Variety Artistes’ Federation, along with some current variety performers and other key industry representatives from the world of entertainment.

Jimmy has been asked to host the event by the general secretary of Equity, Christine Payne. He also recently met with the principal organisers of the event, Louise Grainger and Michael Day from Equity, at a hotel in Lytham St Annes (pictured above).
