Performing on cruise ships is not all plain sailing

Hi folks! Here is my July @leponline sadly I have to report that this wonderful Passenger Shipping Company is no longer trading, and is now a casualty, and another repercussion of Covid 19. #StaySafe

Jimmy Cricket talks about performing on cruise ships in his latest newspaper column – and how it’s not always as idyllic as it sounds!

In the 27 July edition of the Lancashire Post, Jimmy recalls one particular time when things did not go to plan.

He posted a copy of his column (above) on social media and a full transcript of it is below.

As a postscript to his message, Jimmy said: “Hi folks! Here is my July @leponline

“Sadly I have to report that this wonderful Passenger Shipping Company is no longer trading, and is now a casualty, and another repercussion of Covid 19. #StaySafe”

Scrumptious grub

You know I met my good lady on a cruise ship.

We stood on the deck looking out on the moonlight glimmering on the waves and she said, “You know you remind me of the sea”.

I said, “You mean I’m rough and rugged?”

She said, “No, you make me sick!”

I wish I had a disinfectant cleaned ten pound note for every person that’s said to me how much they envy me sailing round the world seeing all the sights and tucking into scrumptious grub and getting paid for the privilege.

Now I don’t want to seem ungrateful for all this.

And I’d be telling a lie if I said I didn’t pinch myself whenever looked out of the cabin window, as the ship sailed into breathtakingly beautiful places like Venice.

Having said all that, being a passenger and an entertainer on board are two very different things, especially if you are a comedian.

If you tickle their funny bone on the night it’s your turn to perform, you can strut around the decks the next morning with your chest out drinking in the compliments.

However, if your humour doesn’t appeal to them and you struggle during your spot, you feel like you want to hide in your cabin and get your meals pushed under the door.

Here’s the thing folks it may not be your fault because cruise ships, like life itself, can throw you a curve.

I’m going to give you an example and l warn you, if you’re of a nervous disposition then look away now.

A few years back, I was booked to do a stint on a cruise ship with one of the big cruise companies.

Collective groans

I flew to Honolulu via LA and joined the ship.

The next night after I arrived on board the Captain himself came on the intercom in the cabin to say he was very sorry but the ship had developed engine trouble and that when we docked in Auckland, New Zealand, it would have to stay there for a few days and we wouldn’t now be visiting Bora Bora, Wellington.

As he reeled off the names of these exotic places I could almost hear the collective groans of the passengers.

Remember this was a round-the-world cruise and most of them had paid a small fortune to be on there.

Some had even made arrangements to meet friends and family at these ports.

An air of despondency settled over the ship and the next morning a group of angry passengers attended a hastily arranged meeting to see what legal action could be taken against the shipping company.

The next night I was due to do my spot and I toyed with the idea of jumping over board and heading for the nearest shore.

It was either that or play to a roomful of disgruntled passengers and from where I stood on the deck the sharks seemed a much more pleasant option.

I finally succumbed to my senses and did my show. I won’t say I did badly but after my show they held a minute’s silence.

You’ll be happy to know, dear readers, that I’ve shook off the emotional scars from that incident and in Easter 2021 (lockdown permitting), I’ll be doing cabaret on a Maritime Cruises ship, The Columbus, and we’ll be stopping off at ports around Great Britain and the Channel Islands.

Stay safe and healthy.

Visit to the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela

Jimmy Cricket posted some photographs on Twitter

Jimmy Cricket has paid a visit to a special cathedral during a day’s sight-seeing in north-west Spain.

The well-known Northern Irish entertainer is currently working on a cruise ship which is sailing along the coasts of France, Portugal and Spain.

He and his wife May are on board the Magellan – a sailing vessel belonging to Cruise and Maritime Voyages.

Jimmy posted on social media that he had visited the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, the resting place for the relics of the apostle St James and the finishing point for a popular pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James).

The cathedral is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela and is an integral part of the world heritage site in Galicia.

Famous funnyman Jimmy Cricket is currently working on a cruise ship which is sailing along the coasts of France, Portugal and Spain.

Jimmy, 72 and his wife May are on board the Magellan – a ship belonging to Cruise and Maritime Voyages. It’s a boat he has performed on previously.

The first stop after leaving Liverpool was Ireland and Belfast-born Jimmy posted on social media (see above): “Here at our first port of call, Dublin, where we bumped into the great genius wit himself [Oscar Wilde] and Molly Malone!”

Oscar Wilde, born in Dublin, was an Irish poet in the latter half of the 19th century and became one of London’s most popular playwrights at that time, being especially well-known for his witty portrayal of people and life in general.

As a result of being on the cruise, Jimmy has postponed his next ‘Charity Jam Night’ at St Vincent’s Parish Centre in Rochdale by one week until Tuesday 14 August.

Tórshavn Cathedral on the Faroe IslandsJimmy Cricket visited a turf-roofed restaurant and an 18th-century cathedral when he visited the Faroe Islands recently.

The famous entertainer, 71, had the chance to visit the group of islands, which are in the Atlantic Ocean, north west of Scotland.

The islands are a self-governing island territory of Denmark and have a population of nearly 50,000.

Jimmy visited the capital city of Tórshavn, which is on Streymoy Island. Tórshavn was founded in the 10th century and named after Thor, the god of thunder and lightning in Norse mythology. It is the political centre of the Faroes.

Among the places comedian Jimmy visited was a grass-roofed restaurant (top) – apparently, sheep are used to cut the grass when it grows! – and the city’s cathedral (above right).

The visit to Tórshavn was a port of call during a special Irish-themed cruise off the north coast of Scotland on the Magellan – a ship belonging to Cruise and Maritime Voyages – on which Jimmy was performing.

This short one-week cruise journeys up to the Faroe Islands and across to the Scottish Highlands.

Jimmy said: “It was a cruise around the Scottish islands. Starting at Liverpool, we covered the Shetlands, Orkney and then the Faroe Islands, taking in Dundee and Greenock! Played in the magnificent theatre cabaret with its fabulous sound and lighting!”

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, folks! 150 150 mhamer

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, folks!

Jimmy Cricket's Christmas card features new US president Donald TrumpDear readers,

I cannot believe 2016 is coming to an end and the Christmas season is once more upon us.

This year has been a fantastic one for me personally as it all started back in January with a service led by the Bishop of Salford to formally award me with my Papal Knighthood.

During the year I have also been fortunate to have:

·         Been involved in some great shows, such as the You Must Be Joking, which toured Northern Ireland back in the spring, and the opening weekend of The Good Old Days autumn season at the world-famous City Varieties Theatre in Leeds

·         Made a couple of appearances alongside my friend Tony Crane and the iconic 60s band The Merseybeats

·         Had trips to Spain to appear in some lovely venues around the Costa Blanca region

·         Paid visits to the Warner Leisure sites at Nidd Hall in Harrogate and Bembridge on the Isle of Wight

·         Did a spring season at the Lyndene Hotel in Blackpool

·         Continued to write a monthly column in the Preston-based Lancashire Evening Post

·         And managed, at long last, to launch a new Christmas CD for the Francis House Children’s Hospice – a project I’ve been wanting to get off the ground for a couple of years. As I write this, I am nearing sales of more than 1,300 from this year’s festive period.

This Christmas I am at the White Rose Theatre in Leeds featuring in a panto production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

And then when we get into 2017, I immediately fly off to Tenerife for an appearance there early in the New Year!

And there’s more…

… Other highlights for 2017 include a return to the Benidorm Palace in March alongside Gerry and the Pacemakers; another residency back at the Lyndene Hotel in Blackpool over the winter, spring and the autumn; teaming up with my pals from  show band group Clubsound for a night in Northern Ireland In April; a visit to the Wayside Cheer Hotel in Guernsey over the Easter weekend; a voyage with Cruise & Maritime Voyages around the Faroe Islands in July; and plenty more to keep me out of mischief!

If you see me advertised at any venue near you in 2017, please do come along and say ‘Hi’!

That reminds me… can I thank all those who over the last year have either seen one of my shows, or browsed this website, or bought one of my CDs or DVDs.

All that remains for me to say, dear readers, is have a happy Christmas and a great start to the New Year!
