Full part in Womble film ‘to be a surprise’

Jimmy Cricket's role in the Womble film was reported in the North Wales Daily Post

Jimmy Cricket’s exact role in a new feature film called Womble will not be revealed until it is actually screened.

As reported on Cricket Times last month, Womble, one of the biggest independent movies to be made in North Wales, is being shot over the summer and will be set for release in 2016.

The 18 March edition of the North Wales Daily Post newspaper states that well-known entertainer Jimmy “will bring his unique brand of comedy to the climax of the film”, which is being set in and round Prestatyn.

It reports that top comedian Jimmy, 69, will play himself as a talent contest judge.

Movie director Lee Howard told the Post: “We’re excited Jimmy will be in the film… it’s fantastic that he’s managed to fit us into his schedule.

“We are saving the details of his performance as a surprise to the audience.”

The film is about a man called Aloysius Rupert Womble (played by actor and comedian Tom Spencer), who is in his 30s and living with Asperger’s Syndrome in a typical seaside resort town.

Children and adults affected by Asperger’s Syndrome have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviours.

Aloysius’s dream is to become a stand-up comedian. The film is a week-long snapshot of his life as he goes through the trials of living with a cognitive disorder, while dealing with the injustices forced upon him by society and parts of his community.

Over the seven-day period he prepares for the biggest night of his life – a talent show in his local pub.

It will feature songs from the Beautiful South’s former lead singer Briana Corrigan and American Pie star Thomas Nicholas as well as a string of original songs written by songwriters especially for the movie.

Nostalgic flashback: Christmas panto 2010

Jimmy Cricket was reminded of a Christmas pantomime past through a series of photographs sent to him recently.

The pictures were from the 2010-11 festive season when the famous entertainer appeared at the Doncaster Civic Theatre in a panto version of Aladdin.

This Christmas show was produced by David Lee of Pantoni Productions and it was he who sent Jimmy the images in the slideshow above.

Funnyman Jimmy said: “It was a nice reminder of the show and its cast, whom I enjoyed working with.”

Since Aladdin there has been a change of scenery for the arts in Doncaster because this pantomime was one of the last before the civic theatre was demolished.

It was replaced by a brand new modern arts centre called Cast and so now only memories remain of what was the town’s main auditorium for a number of years.

The well-known Northern Irish comedian has appeared on most platforms within stage and screen over an illustrious and celebrated career.

He added: “When I was approached by Lee at Best Pictures and he told me about the subject of the film, it sounded an interesting project to get involved with.

“The storyline is charming and yet inspiring as this central character pulls through, even in the face of some difficult daily challenges.”

Jimmy Cricket appeared in the St Pat’s event at the Freckleton Sports and Social Club

Jimmy Cricket felt like he had gone back in time when he performed at a Lancashire venue recently.

The St Pat’s event featured famous entertainer Jimmy alongside the comedian Tony Jo at the Freckleton Sports and Social Club, just outside the city of Preston.

It was a fund-raiser to raise money for the cancer unit at the Victoria Hospital in Blackpool.

The event, which was held on a Sunday afternoon, was packed to the rafters.

Jimmy is performing more and more on a Sunday afternoon and is finding they are a popular time for people to attend a live event.

He said: “What made this afternoon even more enjoyable was that the atmosphere was more akin to the club circuit back in the 1970s and 1980s. I was very impressed with the set-up at this venue in Freckleton.”

Jimmy Cricket was at St Matthew’s Parish Hall in Jarrow in Tyne and WearJimmy Cricket was especially happy to help out at a fund-raising event recently.

The famous entertainer was at St Matthew’s Parish Hall in Jarrow in Tyne and Wear for the special function, which was organised by a lady called Liz Boylan.

It was arranged in memory of Liz’s late husband who passed away last year. She wanted the proceeds of the event to go to the Lourdes Easter pilgrimage. Easter is a special time at the famous shrine in France for young disabled children.

Liz got to know Jimmy’s son, Fr Frankie, when he studied theology at Ushaw College and Durham University a few years ago during his training for the Catholic priesthood.

So it was no surprise that Jimmy bumped into some of Fr Frankie’s friends with whom he trained and who went along to St Matthew’s to support Liz and her event.

Jimmy said: “A big thanks also to all at the Bede’s Well guest house in Jarrow where I and my wife, May, stayed after the show. We both received magnificent hospitality and I cannot praise the owner Paul enough.”

The two photos accompanying this story are of Jimmy and friends at the fund-raising event.

Jimmy Cricket joins Michael George at the Concordia Theatre Hinckley in Leciestershire on Saturday 23 MayJimmy Cricket has been asked to team up with Midlands crooner Michael George for two special shows in May.

It will mean an evening of great swing music combined with Jimmy’s inimitable style of comedy. There will also be a live band and some great support acts lined up.

One production will be at the Concordia Theatre in Hinckley, Leicestershire, near to where singer Michael George is based. In fact, it is becoming an annual tradition for him to bring a show to the Concordia Theatre as this is the third time he will do so.

Each of the previous two shows have been very well attended, so everyone is expecting a packed auditorium when Jimmy joins Michael for this year’s version on Saturday 23 May.

Virtually the same production will visit the Trinity Arts centre in Gainsborough a week before the Concordia one as both Michael and Jimmy head there on Saturday 16 May.
