Team Cricket just miss out on final two of BBC TV show

Henry Kelly and Jimmy Cricket are two of the contestants in the Ireland-themed edition of Pointless

Jimmy Cricket and his team partner Henry Kelly just missed out on reaching the final two of a BBC TV quiz show.

The pair were among four teams on BBC One’s Ireland-theme edition of Pointless on Saturday (14 March).

The programme went out on BBC One at 6.05pm.

It also featured Foster and Allen, Pauline McLynn, Vogue Williams, Clodagh McKenna and Anna Haugh.

Radio and television broadcaster Henry (pictured above with Jimmy), presented Going for Gold from 1987 to 1996.

There was a jackpot of £2,500 which would go to two charities chosen by the finalists – but only if they guessed a pointless answer.

Jimmy, who came up with a particularly good answer of ‘Hale’, and Henry did well in the first round.

And they just missed out on getting any further by only a few points in round two.

Author and actor Pauline McLynn and model and media personality Vogue Williams were the eventual winners.

They beat folk music duo Foster and Allen who finished off the show with a rendition of ‘Maggie’.

Pointless is a quiz in which contestants try to score as few points as possible.

To do this, they must come up with the correct but obscure answers to general knowledge questions.

All the questions asked were previously to a panel of 100 individuals in a pre-conducted public survey.

Alexander Armstrong hosts the show with help from Richard Osman.

The programme first aired in 2009 and has had 22 regular series, plus 11 celebrity ones.

Belfast-born Jimmy, who now lives in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, said before the show he really enjoyed the experience.

“Well folks, what a fun show to be part of,” he said, though he clearly could not reveal the result beforehand.

Jimmy Cricket had a trip down memory lane recently when he was reminded of his appearance on BBC’s Pebble Mill at One more than 22 years ago.

The famous comedian appeared on the show, hosted by Ross King, along with The Barron Knights, a British humorous pop group, originally formed in 1959 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

Pebble Mill at One was a live daily chat show broadcast on weekdays at 1pm on BBC One, screened from 2 October 1972 to 23 May 1986 and again from 20 October 1991 to 25 May 1996.

It was transmitted from the Pebble Mill studios at BBC Birmingham, being hosted unusually from the centre’s main foyer area, rather than a conventional television studio.

It was a posting on social media channel Twitter, which provided the flashback for Jimmy.

The tweet, from Dame Agnes Guano‏ (@agnes_guano), said:  “Pebble Mill from March 1996 – welcomes (amongst others) Jimmy and The Barron Knights.”

Ross King MBE is a Scottish television presenter, actor and writer best known for being LA Correspondent for ITV  breakfast programmes Lorraine and Good Morning Britain. He hosted Pebble Mill at One for five years.

Jimmy Cricket appeared on Keith Harris’s holiday laughter show (with Orville and Cuddles) at the Royal Opera House in the summer of 1982

Jimmy Cricket has been paying tribute in his latest newspaper column to ventriloquist Keith Harris, who died last month.

Keith, who, with his puppet duck Orville, became a regular feature of Saturday night TV in the 1980s, was 67.

He entertained generations of children with his sidekick Orville, a bright green duck who wore a nappy and spoke in a high-pitched voice but couldn’t fly. He also gave life to the popular puppet Cuddles the monkey, whose catchphrase was ‘I hate that duck!’

In addition to fronting The Keith Harris Show on BBC One, he (and Orville) gave private performances at birthday parties for Prince William and his brother Harry, at the request of Diana, Princess of Wales.

His 1982 single, Orville’s Song, was a top five hit, selling more than 400,000 copies.

In his May column for the Preston-based Lancashire Evening News, Jimmy says: “Most ventriloquists that are successful discover one dummy that tickles people’s funny bone, but Keith was blessed with two.

“In 1983, holidaymakers were still visiting our summer resorts en masse and Keith’s show was a sellout from start to finish.

“Keith Harris – you weren’t just a superb ventriloquist, you were a great showman and producer.

“We salute you.”

Jimmy Cricket and the band at Pontins on the Isle of WightJimmy Cricket was recently reminded of the days when he worked at a Pontins holiday village where fellow TV star Shane Richie was the entertainments manager!

Terri Gardner, who worked with Jimmy in the early 1980s, sent the photo above via a Facebook message.

The picture features Terri and her partner, Ron, and the rest of their band alongside Jimmy at the Pontins holiday village called Little Canada on the Isle of Wight back in 1983.

Jimmy said: “Actually the band worked with me a few times that year and the really interesting fact associated with this holiday village during the same year was that the entertainments manager was none other than Shane Richie!”

Richie is an English actor, comedian, singer and media personality, well-known for his portrayal of the character Alfie Moon in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders.
