The fun run to mark comedian Jimmy Cricket’s 70th birthday will be a musical affair.

The 2nd Rossendale Scout Band (above) are to provide music throughout the lead-up to the race on 18 October and during the run itself.

The whole event is being organised by Rochdale-based race organiser Andy O’Sullivan. The 5K run will start near the Cock and Magpie pub in Whitworth and take in two laps of a course which circles the picturesque Cowm Reservoir.

Its main aim is to raise funds for charity. Jimmy, who turns 70 on the eve of the race, is a huge supporter of the Francis House Children’s Hospice.

Also present on the day will be Roch Valley Radio, representatives from Francis House and, of course, Jimmy himself – he will start the race and present prizes to the winners.

The leader of the 2nd Rossendale Scout Band, Graham Helms, said: “When I heard about the race I thought it would be great for the band to get involved as I have known Jimmy for a number of years and he is such a great person, as well as a tremendous entertainer.

“I now will have to put my thinking cap on for appropriate race music, which might feature the William Tell Overture when Jimmy starts the race off!”

Jimmy said: “I am just thrilled Graham and his band are coming along to add to the atmosphere of the event and to help make it more of a spectacle.

“The event is definitely building and even if you don’t know a runner taking part in the fun run, why not come along and enjoy all that is going on and raise a few quid for a great cause.”

The entry fee to take part in this fun race is £4 to club runners and £6 to all others. An additional £1 will be charged to entrants who turn up on the day. Prizes will be awarded to all race finishers. Jimmy will be there to send runners on their way and also greet them as they finish.

It won’t only be seasoned club runners who take to the starting line this autumn for the fun run being organised to mark famous funnyman Jimmy Cricket’s 70th birthday.

Some people – including Whitworth resident Jo Davies – will also be using the event on 18 October in a bid to get healthier.

Jo saw the run advertised in a local Rochdale magazine and thought it would be a good goal for her as she has never been a runner and a few months ago started light jogging in response to a major health scare at the end of last year.

The mum of three has already lost 18lb in weight since April and now hopes to continue to build her stamina up in preparation for the 5k course, which Jimmy’s birthday fun run will follow around Cowm Reservoir in Whitworth. The form for Jimmy Cricket's 70th birthday fun runJo was equally drawn to the run as the event is in aid of the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Manchester and she has received pledges of £200 in sponsorship from friends and family to encourage her to do it.

She said: “In December last year I was advised my weight was one of the contributing factors to my health scare, so I said then I was going to do something about this for both myself and my children.

“In April I set myself a goal and so the exercise and healthy eating began. When I saw the article about this 5K run, I thought ‘come on you can do this in three months’ time!’

“I also think that the charity Francis House is an amazing charity and I decided to fund-raise for this as an extra motivation to complete the 5k.”

Rochdale-based entertainer Jimmy said: “I am thrilled this race is now being considered throughout the community. I understand Jo has also roped in one of her friends, her brother and step-dad to also take part in the run, so what a great supporting team she has lined up for the occasion!

“This is great to hear as the idea behind the fun run is to make it more of a community event to mark my birthday. This is why it is really fantastic Roch Valley Radio [which broadcasts to Fairfield General Hospital in Bury 24 hours a day] are coming along to set up their roadshow and that the fund-raising team from Francis House are going to be present too.

“Add in the nearby Cock and Magpie pub – who are arranging some post-race entertainment – and this is turning out to be a fun-filled event for everyone.”

Jimmy Cricket birthday fun run plans gather pace

Jimmy Cricket and runners outside the Cock & Magpie pub in WhitworthComedian Jimmy Cricket has visited the start and finish location for the charity fun run which will mark his 70th birthday.

The well-known entertainer went to see the Cock & Magpie pub in Whitworth, where the runners will set off on the morning of 18 October for a 5K race in aid of his preferred charity, the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Manchester.

Belfast-born and Rochdale-based Jimmy will be on hand to wave off the runners and to meet them when they return.

The race is being organised by local race organiser Andy O’Sullivan who has plotted out a 5K course that takes in the breath-taking scenery around Cowm Reservoir – the race will involve two laps of this magnificent beauty spot.

With just four months to go, Jimmy met Andy and also Chris, who is the landlord of the Cock & Magpie on Tonge Lane End. Jimmy then met some runners (above) who are hoping to participate in the event.

Andy said: “It was great for Jimmy to visit the location I’ve chosen for his race. I am just thrilled this event is taking shape and the run will just be a nice way to mark this great man’s contribution to Rochdale, while raising a few quid for such a worthy cause as Francis House.”

Jimmy said: “I am thrilled to be marking my birthday in such a fantastic way. It is amazing what can come out of taking a walk into Healey Dell Nature Reserve and bumping into Andy O’Sullivan!

“But seriously, this idea has been in the pipeline for around a year and I am pleased we are at that point where the event is not too far away.

“Even if you are not a dedicated runner, come along and enjoy a leisurely jog around a course which is stunning. Better still, why not come along as a spectator and support all the runners, as in this way you can still contribute to the event and help us raise lots of money!”

David Ireland, chief executive at Francis House, said: “Jimmy has supported Francis House over many years and helped raise thousands of pounds towards the care we provide to sick children, young people and their families. The form for Jimmy Cricket's 70th birthday fun run

“We’d like to express our grateful thanks to Jimmy, Andy and the team at the Cock and Magpie for organising the fun run. We hope lots of people will take part, enjoy the day and show their support.”

The entry fee to join Jimmy on this fun race is £4 to club runners and £6 to all others. An additional £1 will be charged to entrants who turn up on the day. Prizes will be awarded to all race finishers.
