A special surprise at regular Rochdale charity event 150 150 mhamer

A special surprise at regular Rochdale charity event

Wonderful Tuesday evening, been doing Jam nights for 20yrs raising funds for local charities with my fellow organisers, Kath, Alan, Pauline who arranged a surprise for me to celebrate my 50 yrs with my old friends & family there, my thanks also to @JMSportPix @ColinMeredith52

Jimmy Cricket had a nice surprise at the latest charity jam night in Rochdale where he lives.

The famous entertainer thought it was going to be another of the regular events held every few months at a local parish hall.

However, it turned out to be a very special occasion as his family and some old friends attended the show.

The surprise was arranged as part of the celebrations to mark Jimmy’s remarkable 50 years in showbusiness.

Jimmy described it as a “wonderful evening”.

He added: “My fellow organisers, Kath, Alan and Pauline arranged a surprise for me to celebrate my 50 years with my old friends and family there.

“My thanks also to @JMSportPix @ColinMeredith52.”

Jimmy and his wife May – a professional singer – have for about 20 years hosted a regular night of entertainment.

The event takes place at St Vincent’s RC parish centre in Norden.

Chosen charity

It provides an opportunity for Belfast-born Jimmy and other performers to try out some new (and relive old) routines.

Jimmy and May invite different guests who perform free of charge.

Proceeds from a raffle and the selling of refreshments go to a chosen charity.

The popular comedian has nicknamed those who regularly support these evenings as ‘Jimmy’s Jammers’.

He has been making people laugh as a professional comedian for 50 years – usually raising money for worthy causes at the same time.

Instantly recognisable for wearing a funny hat and green wellies marked L and R on the wrong feet, he proudly keeps his comedy clean – increasingly rare these days –  making him a perfect family entertainer.

His best-known catchphrases include ‘And there’s more!’ and ‘Come closer!’

He is also famed for reading out Letters from his Mammy, which have provided the material for two published books.

He will also be returning on 2 August, 6 September, 4 October, 1 November and 6 December.

His latest appearance at the Lyndene was on Wednesday 7 December last year.

Rochdale-based Jimmy has dubbed the Lyndene as his “second home” as he has done so many shows at the Blackpool venue over several years.

Paul Swift, general manager at the Lyndene, previously told Jimmy: “We love nothing more than getting to split our sides laughing on the first Wednesday of every month watching your show when you come to visit.

“Jimmy isn’t just one of our incredible acts, he’s family and takes the time to speak to all of our team and check how they each are when he comes to visit.

“Thank you for being you Mr Cricket!

“We look forward to your visits and always love watching your fantastic act!”

Search for a Star success signalled start of something special

Next @leponline article chatting about the past and the wonderful television showcase 'Search For A Star' which featured newly discovered talent from the cabaret and club scene (where they came to see you perform live for the audition) #keepvarietyalive

Jimmy Cricket’s big breakthrough into showbusiness came when he won a TV talent show called Search for a Star.

The Northern Irish comedian says he had previously spent eight gruelling years performing on the North of England club circuit.

“It was a tough, bruising apprenticeship,” Jimmy tells readers of his latest newspaper column in the Lancashire Evening Post.

London Weekend Television’s Search for a Star featured newly discovered talent from the cabaret and club scene.

And winning one of the programme’s heats in 1980 put Jimmy in the national spotlight.

He appreciated the significance of the timing, “breaking into televison in the 1980s when glamorous and dazzling variety shows dominated the schedules”.

Jimmy was later given his own series on Central Television in the mid-1980s called And There’s More.

It included the first TV appearance by the impressionist Rory Bremner.

Easter cruise included special birthday celebration 150 150 mhamer

Easter cruise included special birthday celebration

A thunderstorm and a timely stop-off to celebrate a special birthday helped to make Jimmy Cricket’s Easter cruise a memorable one!

Famous funnyman Jimmy was a celebrity entertainer on the Ambience, the flagship of Ambassador Cruise Line.

His wife, May – a professional singer – accompanied him on the boat, which set sail from London Tilbury on 3 April.

Guernsey, Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and Belfast in Northern Ireland – Jimmy’s place of birth – were among the destinations on the 11-night trip.

It included a ‘Journey through Holy Week’ theme, with Easter services and reflections on board.

Jimmy said: “It was organised by a lifelong friend of ours called Chris Gidney who used to run an organisation called Christians in Entertainment, so it was Christian-themed.

“When we stopped at Belfast, May and I were able to attend a birthday lunch to celebrate her brother Carson’s 80th birthday.

“How convenient was that!?”

He added: “And when we docked in the port of Cherbourg, we were hit by a thunderstorm!”

‘What a star!’

High praise for Jimmy came from one of the passengers called MJ Simpson (pictured below).

Here is MJ’s description of himself on his Twitter profile.

“Writes a bit, acts a bit, doesn’t sing. One book every 20 years or so. Proud owner of the officially second-best handlebar moustache in Britain.”

He posted after the cruise: “The absolute highlight of an @ambassadorcruis packed with great times was seeing and even meeting comedy legend @jimmy__cricket.
