The April winner of the Golden Wellington is awarded to JOHN MCARTHY
John is a remarkable man who hails from Liverpool, a city that I have visited countless times over my lifetime. John is connected with the FLAME organisation, who send the physically disabled and handicapped over to Lourdes on pilgrimage every Easter.
In fact, John has a heart of gold because he got introduced to FLAME through his wonderful daughter – Erica, who is disabled. John and Erika (and John’s wife Betsy) have been travelling to Lourdes with FLAME for quite some time now.
But apart from being a great father and travelling over to Lourdes every year, John also got involved in helping to fundraise for this organisation. This led him to asking me to help him and for the last ten years I have been appearing in charity shows across the Catholic club network of Liverpool in support of this worthy cause.
John has been doing the cash raising on a voluntarily basis, but has now decided that as he is not getting any younger, he will retire gracefully. To mark this occasion we hade a great finale, a signature event to sign off John’s great contribution to Flame, and this happened in March of this year at the Our Lady of Good Health Parish Centre, in Croxteth.
This was truly an end of an era and a great show to bow out on. The picture is of my handing over the Golden Wellington to John in recognition of all his hard work during his years as a fundraiser.
Good luck John and happy retirement!
